WHY THE SMALL PRODUCER?
Around the world, most people are familiar with the big Champagne houses but very little is known about Champagne as a region and the incredible variety that is available through the truly local producers. Hidden within a relatively small growing area, the villages of the Champagne region house some 3,500 'petits vignerons', who for hundreds of years have been producing the Champagnes 'du terroir' in small quantities. As a consequence of their small-scale operations, most of their wines have only been available locally in France. Unlike most principal houses, the producers selected by The Champagne Guild live and work with their own vines all year round and are intimately involved in every stage of their cultivation, harvest and processing. It is through such producers therefore that the rich and fascinating diversity of the Champagne region reaches its fullest expression.
